What it means

Overwhelmed — usually comically so. ಥ_ಥ is the reaction to a sad film, a lost draft, or a friend's good news that has landed unexpectedly hard. The tear-filled eyes are drawn far more heavily than in the milder sad faces, which is why it reads as sobbing rather than sighing.

Where each character comes from

Every kaomoji is borrowed type. None of these characters were designed to be part of a face.

CharCode pointUnicode nameRole in the face
U+0CA5KANNADA LETTER THAThe eyes, brimming. The stacked loops read as tears welling up.
_U+005FLOW LINEA flat mouth — no words available.

ಥ is a Kannada letter (tha), the sibling of ಠ used in the disapproval face. The two were adopted together by English-speaking users for their shapes alone: ಠ became the sceptical eye, ಥ the tearful one. Neither has any connection to emotion in Kannada, where they are ordinary consonants.

How to type it without breaking it

Copy it. There is also a wider variant, ಥ﹏ಥ, which uses a wavy mouth (U+FE4F) and reads as a longer, more drawn-out cry.

When to use it

Reacting to something moving or something disastrous, with the volume turned up for effect. For a gentler mood use the sad faces instead — ಥ_ಥ is closer to full sobbing than to disappointment.
