What it means

Not anger — judgement. The disapproval face is what you send after a bad pun, a suspicious claim, or a plan that everyone can see will not work. It is silent on purpose: the joke is that the sender has stopped talking and is simply looking at you. Because it implies an audience, it lands best in group chats.

Where each character comes from

Every kaomoji is borrowed type. None of these characters were designed to be part of a face.

CharCode pointUnicode nameRole in the face
U+0CA0KANNADA LETTER TTHAThe eyes. The horizontal bar above the bowl reads as a raised, sceptical eyebrow — which is entirely accidental.
_U+005FLOW LINEA flat, unamused mouth.

ಠ is a letter of the Kannada script, one of the writing systems of southern India, where it represents a retroflex consonant. It has nothing to do with facial expressions. English-speaking internet users adopted it purely because the loop-with-a-bar shape looks exactly like an eye under a cocked eyebrow. The related ಥ (U+0CA5, KANNADA LETTER THA) became the standard crying eye for the same reason.

How to type it without breaking it

Copy it. Kannada characters are not available on Latin keyboards, and autocorrect on some phones will try to replace them. Once pasted, it renders correctly on any system with reasonable Unicode font coverage — which is nearly all of them.

When to use it

Responding to a bad joke, a dubious source, or a decision you're not going to formally object to. It's playful when aimed at friends and genuinely cutting when aimed at a stranger — the stare doesn't carry tone markers, so read the room.

FAQ

What does ಠ_ಠ mean?
It's the look of disapproval — a flat, unimpressed stare with one eyebrow raised. It signals scepticism or mild judgement rather than real anger, and is usually sent instead of a reply.
Is ಠ a real letter?
Yes. ಠ is a letter of the Kannada script used in southern India (U+0CA0, KANNADA LETTER TTHA). Its use as an eye is purely visual borrowing — the character has no connection to emoticons in its own language.
